No matter what the theme or the picture, all a child - or the young at heart - needs is the page and something to color with. Pencils, crayons, markers, watercolor paints, chalk. There are coloring books made specially to be used with water-colors, that come with their own little set of paints and brush, and have thicker pages. Best of all of course are free pages that can be printed out at home any time you like. There is so much variety obtainable that as long as they have their pages and something to color with a child will never get bored. For many children, there is no greater gift they can give to Mom or Dad than a picture they coloured all by themselves. Inside or outside of the lines, any page coloured with love and happiness is a masterpiece

Google even offers a selection of pages with everything from dragons to princesses and Dora the Explorer to animals and sports cars. Each picture is accompanied with a link to the website it was taken from, so you get a huge range of websites you can look on to find different kinds of coloring pages. This is a wonderful resource that provides you with a diverse collection of free, printable coloring sheets. Individual character websites also often have great coloring pages to print. For example, by searching Google for the Strawberry Shortcake website, you can print a large number of high quality coloring sheets that will delight any little girl. You can try looking up other favorite characters for your child, such as Thomas the Tank Engine, Bob the Builder, and Curious George, and you’ll find some free coloring sheets you can print out at each site. It’s like having a hundred different coloring books at your disposal all the time.

Before the road trip take the kids to the stores so they can pick out their road trip coloring books and other activities. This is an even better choice because the kids will settle beforehand which type of activity is most interesting and the best for them. Tell them that you'll hold onto the items until the road trip and they'll spend the time until the trip in anticipation of playing with their new toys. They'll be that much more likely to stay involved with their coloring books and crayons on the trip rather than on each other, so you'll be that much more relaxed while on the drive.
